1. What is HarmonyOS?
HarmonyOS is the first full-scene distributed OS based on microkernel. It is an operating system independently developed by Huawei. HarmonyOS System was officially released at the Huawei Developers Conference (<HDC.2019>) on August 9, 2019. Huawei will take the lead in deploying intelligent terminals such as smart screens, vehicle terminals and wearable terminals. In the future, more and more intelligent devices will use open source HarmonyOS .
HarmonyOS achieves modular coupling, which corresponds to
flexible deployment of different devices. HarmonyOS has three layers of architecture. The first layer
is the core, the second layer is the basic services, and the third layer is the
program framework. It can be used on a large screen, PC, automobile and other
different equipment. It can also be used on mobile phones at any time, but for
the time being, Huawei still prefers Android.
The underlying layer of HarmonyOS is composed of HarmonyOS microkernel, Linux kernel and Lite Os and
it will become a complete HarmonyOS microkernel architecture in the future.
2.Development process
- [2012]
HarmonyOS started out in Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2012.
- [2018.8.24]
Huawei applied for the Huawei HarmonyOS trademark. The
registration announcement date of HarmonyOS trademark is May 14,
2019. The exclusive rights of HarmonyOS trademark are from May
14, 2019 to May 13, 2029.
- [2019]
Huawei has allegedly shipped 1 million smartphones with its self-developed
"HarmonyOS" operating system onboard for testing.
- [2019.5.17]
Huawei Operating System Team developed its own proprietary operating
system HarmonyOS.
- [2019.8.9]
Huawei officially released HarmonyOS, and HarmonyOS Operating
System will be open source.
3.When the HarmonyOS will be released?
This new OS is still “plan B” for the Chinese technology giant, since
Huawei will need to solve the biggest hole in the adoption of Harmony OS,the
app ecosystem. Huawei is building up its AppGallery platform as an alternative
to the Google Play Store, and this week the company unveiled Huawei Mobile
Services as an alternative to Google Play Services. Huawei is in the process of
building its own ecosystem, and if the trade ban doesn’t lift by the end of
this year or early next year, then Huawei will be forced to switch to Harmony
OS for its new devices, including the upcoming Huawei Mate 30 series. In fact,
Richard Yu confirmed that the Mate 30 did not receive certification to use
Google Play Services before the trade ban was enacted, so Huawei is considering
using Harmony OS on the device if the ban isn’t lifted in time.
Huawei says that its new OS represents an entirely new generation of
operating systems as it enables AI capability in different scenarios from PCs,
tablets, and other domains. Huawei has already been internally testing its new
operating system on multiple devices, though Richard Yu did not confirm if the
foldable Huawei Mate X was among those test devices. Mr. Yu says that “many”
partners have expressed interest in developing products with Harmony OS, but he
declined to provide names of the interested parties. In a press release, Huawei
says they will “lay the foundations for Harmony OS in the Chinese market” first
before expanding it to the global market.
We’ll learn more about Huawei’s new operating system this week at Huawei’s
Developer Conference.
4.What does
the US ban have to do with HarmonyOS?
Google locked
Huawei devices out of Android updates because of the US-imposed
ban. The Commerce Department granted Huawei a three-month general license in late May to
update existing devices. In the weeks that followed, Huawei apparently had the
name "Hongmeng" trademarked in China and Peru, suggesting that it was preparing for
a move away from Android.
On
Aug. 9, Trump said the US won't do
business with China, but the White House reportedly later said the
president was referring to a separate ban on
federal agencies purchasing telecommunications and video
surveillance equipment from the company. Earlier Friday, reports emerged
that trade tensions prompted the US to delay granting
licenses for companies to restart sales to Huawei.
5.Huawei's HarmonyOS Is No Android
Replacement
HarmonyOS is the very
model of a modern operating system. It's also nowhere near ready for
smartphones.
